God's Spirit calls us to Ministery

The Presbyterian Women's Annual Tea at the manse was attended by about twenty women on August 16. The food and social time were great and the weather was semi-cooperative. Mary Markin and Vicki Sellars were recognized for their years of service with Honorary Lifetime Memberships.
We are collecting goods for the Villa in Atlants for delivery later this summer. The Villa provedes housing for third world nation persons studying health issues at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. See the Newsletter for a list of needed articles or call the church or one of the Ladies of the Church for more information. We will be shippong the materials to Atlanta soon after Labor Day, so bring your stuff to the church now.

Mr. Michael Norris has accepted the call to become our new Organist and Choir Director effective August 15, 2008. Mike is a long time resident of Tallahassee and comes with a Master's degree in Church Music and an undersgraduate degree in Organ, which he admits is a bit rusty. Take the time to meet and introduce yoursaelf to Mike and his wife Laurinda. Their tradition is Baptist, so there will no doubt be some change to the flavor of our music, but Mike is committed to maintaining the musical excellence we have come to expect as our gift to God from the people of the First Presbyterian Churc of Havana.
Choir rehearsals will begin Sunday, September 7 at 9:00. This will allow all singers to then attend Sunday School at 10:00 if they desire. There will still be the ocassional weeknight rehearsal to prepare music for special times, like Homecoming and Easter.

The Summer project is collecting materials needed for the ministry of the Villa in Atlanta, Georgia. Their mission is to support overseas students who are studying at ther Center for Desease control. Ronda Hurst initiated this project in 2006 and it is a mission in constance need of assistance.
Here are some things on the list of needs: batteries, bicycles, blenders, can-openers, crock pots, detergent, dish toweles, coffee makers, cleaning supplies, games, kitchen utensils, hair driers, office supplies, pots and pans, pot holders, tea bags, scissors, tools, toasters, umbrellas, pillows, linens, flatware, as you can see the needs are numerous. We will begin accepting donations after Easter at the church. Cash contributions wil also be taken in lieu of goods.
We will box materials and ship them to the Villa around Labor Day, so bring them over to the church anytime. We decided to ship rather than deliver in person due to the extremely high cost of gasoline and our stewardship of natural resources.

There will be a Presbytery wide training event focussed on evangelism and revitalization on Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 9:30 to Noon at the Chipley Presbyterian Church. There is no cost and lunch is included for free. This event is planned and presented by the Evangelism and Revitalization Committee of the Mission for Outreach Area of our Presbytery of Florida. Bill Brundydge and Bill Bess are both members of this committee. Car pooling makes the trip a nice drive.
